Who we help with health insurance

Health insurance needs differ widely. We regularly speak with people in situations such as:

  • Individuals

People looking for personal health cover that fits their lifestyle, age and budget priorities.

  • Families

Parents wanting to understand how to protect the whole household, including children.

  • Expatriates

Foreign residents in Thailand navigating a new healthcare system and unfamiliar policy wording.

  • Long-term residents

People whose existing arrangements may no longer match their stage of life.

  • New arrivals

Those who have just moved to Thailand and want guidance on where to begin.

  • Retirees

People planning for later-life healthcare needs while living in Thailand.

What to think about

Health insurance can help manage eligible medical expenses according to the policy selected. What is right for you depends on your circumstances — these are the areas most worth thinking through before comparing anything.

The care you expect to use

  • Whether you want inpatient (hospital admission) protection only, or something broader
  • Whether outpatient consultations and treatment matter to you
  • Where you would prefer to receive treatment

Where cover applies

  • Thailand-only, regional or international area of cover
  • Whether you travel or spend part of the year elsewhere
  • Whether direct billing with hospitals is available under the plan

How the plan is structured

  • The annual coverage limit and any limits on individual benefits
  • Room and board arrangements
  • Deductible or co-payment structures, which can change how a plan is priced

Application and eligibility

  • Underwriting — how the insurer assesses your application
  • How your medical history and any pre-existing conditions are treated
  • Whether waiting periods apply to certain benefits

The long view

  • Renewability, and whether renewal terms can change
  • How the plan may suit you as you get older
  • How an existing arrangement compares with what is available now

The wording itself

  • Exclusions — what the policy states it does not cover
  • Definitions used for conditions, treatment and hospitalisation
  • Claims and pre-authorisation procedures

Questions worth asking

  • Where do I want to receive treatment?
  • Do I need Thailand-only cover, or international cover?
  • Do I want inpatient protection only, or broader protection?
  • What deductible or co-payment am I comfortable with?
  • Are there conditions in my medical history that should be disclosed?
  • Who else in my household needs to be covered?

Understanding your insurance

A few terms that come up often in this category, explained in plain language.

Sum insured / coverage limit
The maximum amount a policy may pay for a covered claim, or for a particular benefit within the policy. Limits vary by insurer and plan.
Deductible / excess
An amount you may be responsible for yourself before the insurer contributes to a claim. Choosing a different deductible can change how a policy is priced.
Exclusion
Something a policy states it does not cover. Exclusions differ between policies, which is why reading the wording matters.
Waiting period
A period after a policy starts during which certain benefits may not yet be available. Whether one applies, and for how long, depends on the policy.
Underwriting
The insurer's process of assessing an application and deciding on what terms, if any, cover can be offered.
Pre-existing condition
A medical condition that existed before cover began. How each insurer treats pre-existing conditions varies, and disclosure is normally required.
Renewal
Continuing cover for a further policy period. Renewal terms, and whether they can change, depend on the insurer and the policy.
Claim
A request to the insurer for payment or assistance under the policy. Whether a claim is payable depends on the policy terms and the circumstances.

Common questions

Is health insurance the same for everyone?

No. Benefits, limits, area of cover, exclusions and eligibility vary by insurer and by plan, and the terms offered to an individual can depend on the insurer's assessment of the application.

What information may be needed when applying?

Insurers commonly ask for personal details and information about your health history. What is required depends on the insurer and the plan applied for.

What is a pre-existing condition?

Generally, a medical condition that existed before cover began. Insurers treat pre-existing conditions differently, and accurate disclosure is normally required when applying.

Why should I read the exclusions?

Exclusions describe what a policy states it does not cover. Reading them alongside the benefits is the clearest way to understand what a plan would actually mean for you.
